One Less Recycling Center

It's not for lack of use.

I'm not so sure. Recycling rates in Wicomico County are rather poor. In fact, very poor. I see SO much stuff that should be recycled just going into the landfill. Aren't people around here educated in such matters?

I have used this particular station on occasion and noticed it was nearly always full. In fact I have even called the number to have it emptied.

Now, if you are saying more people could be recycling, sure I agree. But, some will have to go further out of their way because they will have one less place to do it.

Perdue probably got tired of looking at it. I bet the didn't like it there when corporate big wigs came to town.

Is this the one across from Perdue? I go there all the time. There are always people there every time I drive by to.

The aluminum is the way they pay for it.

Can a recycling center be recycled?? And why do they call that stuff Ovaltine?? The mug is round. The can is round. They should call it Roundtine.

It costs more to recycle than to make the goods most the time LE. That's the education, plus most of the recycling goods never even make it to the recycling plants and end up in the land fill anyway. It's mostly just a big waste of time. sorry to say.

@RC "That's the education"

Sorry, that's pure ignorance on your part.

Do you know what the #1 export from the US is? When our ships sail to China from US ports, what are they filled with?? What great product do we sell to China?

Here's a clue. What are we best at making here in the US???

Here's another clue. Failure to recycle contributes to our trade imbalance.

Correct me if you think this is wrong, but I remember hearing some time ago that the cost to recycle a quantity of plastic vs the price of that quantity of recycled plastic on the open market is about 10:1. That's why you don't see more of a push.

If you think I am wrong...demonstrate it. Overall recycling costs more than production of the raw materials and causes more pollution. Why do you think these recycling centers are closing down? I know it makes you feel good to think you are doing some good but outside of paper, it's all in the economics.

All I know is we need another another prison, pharmacy or landfill like I need a colostomy bag on my hip. If you don't buy the recycling cost/benefit analysis, at least try. It keeps additional shit out of the landfills, does offer recycled benefits and it won't make that tearful Indian, who really was an Italian actor, weep over our landfills.

BTW-it is your county f'ing you; maybe at the executive level-I live somewhere else and they make it very easy to recycle. Often AA County will send recycling booths to local concerts/pet zoos/Renasance fests,{yeah..not even going to try to spell it right} fests and will give you huge fing yellow trash cans. Stop allowing sycophant, ignorant dumbasses to destroy your county. And there are many of them. Your city elections are coming up-give these cats some real questions, and don't be satisfied if you feel the vague answer they give you is complete bullshit. Quite frankly, your county executive should be replaced with someone who has actual insight.

Was that directed towards me RC? I was trying to back you up.

@RC "If you think I am wrong...demonstrate it."

I thought I did. Our #1 export is recycled material. If the economics wasn't there, it wouldn't be happening. Do you think these ships are sailing just for fun? Or for a noble cause??? Perhaps you're forgetting about depletion costs?

I'll wager that the only thing you produce is trash, and that you can't even do that right.

@TS "I remember hearing some time ago that the cost to recycle a quantity of plastic vs the price of that quantity of recycled plastic on the open market is about 10:1."

And the cost of making a car is about 10 times that of the car's material on the open market. Does that mean we should stop making cars?

Two Sentz said...

LE, first of all, stop being a jerk to the other commenters.

Secondly, the proper analogy would have been how much does it cost to make a car vs how much can you sell the finished product for.

OK TS. I misread your "recycled plastic" reference. But even there, prices are up. The price of PET pellets is up more than 10-fold from November 2008.

Here's are decent reports on the subject:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recycling
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plastic_recycling

Simply searching on the internet finds all sorts of political stuff. Apparently giving more oil money to the Arabs is "conservatively correct" when it comes to plastic.

The bottom line is that you need to look at all costs, including the costs for waste disposal, and the societal costs for importing more oil.

I agree that plastic costs are marginal, but aluminum and paper costs are clear winners. What recycling plastic can do is to ward off the day of serious oil depletion.

No TS. Thank you :)

LE, I have a question for you. Are you capable of having an intelligent discussion? I ask you that because every time I run into you you are condescending, classless, disrespectful and angry. What's your problem exactly? Do you really think you are smarter than everyone else are are you just that insecure? It's an honest question and I worry your head might explode any minute.

Finally, LE while you are confined to that thought, and I do hope you give an honest and meaningful answer, you are confusing many things here. Exporting recyclables and actual domestic recycling. Domestic recycling is not economical, raw materials to finished product. I would take issue with your statement that our #1 export is a recycled product, unless you think debt falls into that category. ;)

@RC "I would take issue with your statement that our #1 export is a recycled product"

It's not a recycled "product", it's just the unprocessed trash. And it's #1 by weight, not by dollar value. It IS what the ships are loaded with. They process it mostly in China because it's cheaper to do so there, and there are fewer pollution laws.

Wow, quite the little circle jerk going on here.
